YOGA for Post Concussion Recovery – Part 2

Yoga stretch touching the floor

Last week you were introduced to a missing piece in concussion recovery, Empowerment.

Now let’s chat about why a concussion specific YOGA program can provide that missing piece.

In Yoga we change our mindset, allowing self acceptance and discovery. We practice intentions or mantras, essentially new ways to talk to ourselves.

In Yoga we practice breathing and grounding techniques to get a handle on a frantic nervous system and to create safety in our minds and bodies.

In Yoga we practice movement flows which improve spinal mobility, strength, and posture. Special attention is given to the neck in this concussion specific practice.

In Yoga we build overall strength and resilience which creates courage for recovery.

In Yoga we develop awareness of the head and body as they move through space. (Vestibular skills)

In Yoga we play with our vision to bring it out of stuck patterns and combat dizziness.

By practicing Yoga, we experience the powerful mind-body connection needed for healing.

In Yoga we move, we gain freedom. We learn about ourselves. We enjoy ourselves.

If these things sound appealing to you, perhaps Yoga is waiting for you to find it.

OT Shelley’s Post Concussion Recovery program is a mesh of Occupational Therapy and Yoga.  It is a coached, online small group format. It includes videos, yoga classes, worksheets, journaling, and weekly live zoom calls. It is a 12-week progressive program.

We start with the groundwork of mindset and creating safety in the body, moving to increased movement, cardio, and strength. Visual, vestibular and neck therapy are infused throughout. We also talk about Yoga in daily life and other useful tools and life hacks in concussion recovery.

There is a cost, of course, but what is it costing you now to be stuck in symptoms? Your job? Your relationships? Lost time?
