On October 16th, community leaders, researchers, police, service providers, survivors, and advocates came together at the University of Victoria for Shattering the Silence: Intimate Partner Violence & Brain Injury — an event dedicated to raising awareness and inspiring collective action at the intersection of intimate partner violence (IPV) and brain injury.
The day opened with a welcome from Brianna Bear, followed by keynote speaker Dr. Kim Stanton who shared insights from the Independent Systemic Review: The British Columbia Legal System’s Treatment of Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Violence. Addressing gender-based violence requires acknowledging its deep connection with brain injury. Dr. Stanton called for partnership, wrap-around services, and informed practice that can lead to better outcomes for survivors.
Her words set the tone for a day focused on collaboration and shared action — bridging sectors to address the urgent intersection of intimate partner violence and brain injury.
Throughout the day, participants heard from speakers including Sgt. Jon Cawsey, Angela Marie MacDougall, and Tori Dach, who each shed light on the realities of IPV — from the frontline experiences of police and survivor advocacy to the urgent need for trauma-informed brain injury support.
A closing panel hosted by Adam Richards brought together change-makers Karen Mason, Dr. Amanda McCormick, Cole Kennedy, and Janelle Breese Biagioni to highlight ongoing research, community initiatives, and collaborative strategies that are driving change in this field.
