A National Hidden Disability Symbol:                                    It is time. It is right. It is needed.

Consider becoming an ally and join the movement for a national Hidden Disability Symbol in Canada.

Co-founders of the Hidden Disability Symbol (HSDC) movement are: Maeri Perra, Communications Manager, Brain Injury Society of Toronto, Michelle McDonald, Executive Director, Brain Injury Canada, and Laura Brydges, Member of the hidden disability community, and Administrator, facebook.com/HiddenDisability.

This team has prepared a communication kit for individuals or organizations to release before August 24, 2021.

The kit includes:

  1. Media release for local media outlets.
  2. Letter to the editor for local and regional print outlets.
  3. Social media release.
  4. External email for contacts and networks.
  5. An Op Ed piece, written by Laura Brydges.

Through this kit, the movement aims to:

  • Recruit diverse and intersectoral support of organizations and individuals on an Open Letter (which asks the Government of Canada to adopt and promote a national Hidden Disability Symbol)
  • Request and cultivate highest-level organizational support (e.g., national, provincial, regional)
  • Encourage public and organizational participation in the federal Disability Inclusion Action Plan survey (closes August 31, 2021)
  • Recommend survey participants give specific mention of the Hidden Disability Community in Canada
  • Urge survey participants to give specific mention of the need for a national Hidden Disability Symbol
