Big changes are coming to disability assistance in B.C. and they’re designed to make life fairer for couples and families on disability assistance.
Beginning Dec. 1, 2025, couples where both partners receive disability assistance will receive the same support allowance as they would if they were two single people, ensuring they can retain more of their income.
Additionally, starting Jan. 1, 2026, couples and two-parent families where only one person has the Persons with Disabilities (PWD) designation will see their Annual Earnings Exemption increase from $19,440 to $23,400. In total, more than 6,500 families will benefit from the new equalized support rates, and more than 4,300 families will benefit from the expanded earnings exemption.
These updates remove barriers for couples on disability assistance and also support long-term financial stability and dignity for those living on low incomes. These improvements mark a meaningful shift toward equity and stability for people with disabilities across B.C.
Let’s continue advocating for policies that support dignity, independence, and fair opportunities for all.
